Building Your First Lab Setup on a Budget

Non-negotiables:

  1. Laptop + second monitor
  2. Professional OBD2 diagnostic tool
  3. Wideband lambda sensor
  4. ECU reading/writing tool

Where to save initially: Oscilloscope, dyno (hire by the hour), bench testing rig.

Bench testing rig (when ready): ECU mounted outside the car, powered from bench supply. Cost: €200–500.

Total minimum viable setup:

  • Laptop + monitor + OBD + wideband: €800–1,200
  • ECU tool: €1,500–2,500 (used original)
  • Software: €500–1,000/year
