How I Stopped Buying Files and Started Creating My Own Calibrations

For three years I ran a remap business by buying files. I had a supplier, charged €180–250 per car. It worked.

Then two things happened.

Problem 1: A file that failed. Client came back with turbo actuator fault. My supplier sent “corrected” files twice. Problem persisted. I had no way to evaluate the files myself. Refunded the client.

Problem 2: Price compression. A competitor opened charging €120. Another at €99.

What changed: I started working through diesel calibration systematically. The shift happened around month three — I opened a file I’d never seen before and could orient.

First independent calibration: Calibrated my own car through multiple iterations. Compared against my supplier’s version. Mine was better in transient response.

The business now: I charge €350–600 depending on complexity. I don’t buy files. I turn down work I’m not confident with yet — and I’m expanding that list every month.

The three years of buying files built a business. The decision to learn calibration built a career.
